Anthony John Fuleras

June 21, 1920 — April 1, 2016

Anthony John Fuleras age 95 died peacefully with his family by his side, in Maryland early in the morning April 1, 2016.  He was born on the island of Chios Greece and remained a proud “Chioti” his entire life.  He served in the Greek Army during World War II where he fought for the Allies in the Sahara Desert, the Middle East and Italy and survived being wounded twice. Thereafter he worked for the American Embassy in Athens, Greece until he followed his lifelong dream of moving to the United States.  That dream was so strong, that he had already learned English during his teenage years in Chios in the 1930s, something very rare at the time. After settling in Detroit, he began work at the Book Cadillac Hotel being promoted through the ranks to Director of Catering.  It was at the “Book” where known as “Mr. Tony” he thrived, meeting and befriending U.S. Presidents, State and Local politicians, film and stage stars, singers, celebrities and many prominent Detroiters.  The Detroit News published an article about his career at the Book Cadillac prior to its re-opening.

He was also dedicated to his Greek Orthodox faith. He learned how to chant as a young man in Chios, was re-baptized in the Jordan River during his time in the Middle East and went on to serve as chanter in his church for many years.  But above all else he was a devoted family man, often telling his family that they were his proudest accomplishment.  He met his wife Maria on a visit back home while she was visiting her brother who had moved to Chios. They met and married in only eight days leading to a union that lasted fifty two years.  He is survived by his wife Maria, Daughter Anne and Son-in-Law John, Grandson Matthew and Son John. He will be greatly missed. A private service was held in Baltimore Maryland at St. Andrew Orthodox Church on April 8, 2016.  He will be interred in Michigan. Donations in his memory can be made to St. Andrew Orthodox Church at 2028 E. Lombard St. Baltimore, MD 21231.
