Carl Frederick Baer

October 15, 1938 — April 5, 2021

Carl Frederick Baer was born October 15, 1938 in Dayton, Ohio to Carl Alva and Myrtle Minnie (Robinson) Baer. Carl and his family moved from Ohio in 1942 to Baltimore, Maryland, where he and his 7 siblings were raised, living just a short walk from Federal Hill and the Inner Harbor. Carl loved watching the ships coming into the Harbor and visiting the various shops, particularly Lexington and Cross Street markets, where candies and baked goods were sold. He rooted for the home team, particularly the Orioles, and enjoyed Bmore’s infamous steamed crabs. After attending school, he went on to work for Chevron, formerly Vectra Corporation, and was promoted to a supervisory role before retiring after 25 years. He was forced into an early retirement due to his ongoing disabilities. He was not one to sit idle and took great pride in taking care of his yard and home, with hobbies including photography, and collecting German steins, Hess trucks and coins. He enjoyed attending the many festivals and events at the Inner Harbor and vacationing in Ocean City, MD. He loved to laugh, and Redd Foxx always seemed to tickle his funny bone! He liked music and had quite the 8-track collection, with his favorite artists being Elvis, Kenny Rogers, and Conway Twitty. Most important to Carl was his family, and whether it be connecting by phone, sharing a Sunday dinner, or holiday celebrations, he loved exchanging the news of the day or sharing memories from the past. He was a true helper at heart and would be the first to offer his assistance, whether it be a phone call to lift someone’s spirits, attending a doctor’s appointment with a loved one, or donating to someone in need. He had a kind and caring heart and was more than generous. In spite of his disabilities, he dealt with adversity head on and with great courage, never focusing on what he could no longer due or enjoy, but instead on how he would adapt. Carl was someone you could rely on, someone with integrity, fair minded and always humble. He was truly a good man and his family and friends are better for having known him!

Carl is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patricia (Herold) Baer of Glen Burnie; children, Malinda Hickey (Dana) of Windsor Mill, Mark Baer (Shelley) of Glen Burnie, Tina Schneider (Mark) of Pasadena, Tina Herold-Byrd (Paul) of Laurel, Eileen Hatheway of Glen Burnie; brother, Douglas Baer (Shirley) of Glen Burnie; sister, Patricia McGuire (Curtis) of Brooklyn Park; Brother’s-in- law Wayne Herold of Baltimore, Larry Herold of Lewes, DE, 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Carl is preceded in death by his parents, five siblings Donald Baer, Delores Tincher, Anita Cugle, Darrell Baer, and Mary Melinda Holley , sister-in-law Linda Thompson, brother’s in law Charles Thompson and David Herold, and two sons, Carl (Butch) Honeycutt and William Hatheway.
