Cary Duane Phelps, 67, Severn resident, died under hospice care surrounded by his family on Friday, January 10, 2025.
Cary was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday, October 1, 1957, to Norman E. and Audrey N. (Phelps) Phelps. He graduated from Arundel High School in 1975 and remained living in Maryland his entire life. He was a mechanic by trade and retired from Koons Ford of Annapolis in March 2023. He enjoyed cars, especially his 1949 Chevy truck that he restored and made into a hot rod. In his younger years, Cary was often drag racing his truck up and down the east coast and would travel to the different tracks to compete. He also loved to go hunting and fishing, and was always very active. He probably got that from the days helping his Dad on the farm, where he worked and played in the fields. And of course we have to mention that he was a member of the International Association of Turtles--the Turtle Club--for over 33 years and was extremely proud of that. But he was most proud of his extended family, with whom he spent every holiday, attended every wedding, graduation, dance recital--nearly every major event in their lives. Cary will be greatly missed by all those he has left behind.
Cary is preceded by his parents, Norman E. Phelps and Audrey N. (Phelps) Phelps. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Marilyn Susan (Norris) Phelps of Severn; his sister Sheila F. Morris (Scott) of Severn; his brother-in-law Bob G. Norris Jr. (Vivian) of St. Louisville, Ohio; his brother-in-law Jeffery R. Norris (Cheryl), of Pasadena; his 17 nieces and nephews in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina; his 16 grandnieces and grandnephews; and a host of extended family and friends.
Family and friends may call at the Kirkley-Ruddick Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 21st, 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 22nd, 10am, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Park.
