Born Cynthia Arline Martin on September 23, 1950, in Evergreen Park, Illinois to the late William Emmett Martin and Shirley Marie Haggerty Martin. She was the third of six children. Being the only blonde in the family she stood out, not only for her beauty but for being the classic good girl of the family. She lived an honorable life as a wife, mother, grandmother (nana), aunt and cherished friend.
She received her B. A. in Elementary Education from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa before becoming a resident of Glen Burnie, Maryland in 1977. She was a beloved first grade teacher at St. Philip Neri Catholic School in Linthicum for 37 years until her retirement in 2022. To celebrate her love of children’s literature she created many annual events centered around the stories she read with her students including making green eggs and ham on Dr. Seuss’ birthday, making pancakes with the students when reading If You Give a Pig a Pancake and Polar Express Pajama Day to name a few.
With most of her family still in the Midwest, Cindy made it a priority to visit every summer. She knew the importance of family and Cindy, along with her four sisters and best friend turned sister-in-law, created an annual weeklong family event for their children called Lake Adventure. Each year had a different theme and the six of them spent most of the year working together to come up with fun
games, songs, and T-shirts to go with the theme.
Cindy was a devout Catholic, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and was very involved in the life of her beloved St. Philip Neri Parish and School. She had immense trust in the goodness and providence of God. Her favorite prayers were her daily Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
Cindy along with her husband Larry enjoyed socializing with the Stoney Creek Seniors. She was an avid amateur photographer. She most loved taking photos of wildlife and nature. Cindy was also quite the seamstress, sewing, quilting, crocheting & knitting. She made many family heirlooms for her family and friends: blankets, quilts, christening dresses and wedding gowns, including her own.
After being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008, Cindy and her husband Larry participated in the annual Lungevity walk. The walk raises awareness for lung cancer, the most aggressive form of cancer, and fundraises for lung cancer research. She was also an active member of the SPN cancer support group and loved walking with her Ulman Cancer Team. Cindy showed strength, courage, and grace throughout her 17-year battle with cancer.
On April 22, 2025, Cindy passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Cindy is preceded in death by her loving parents Bill and Shirley Martin, her wonderful parents-in-law Pat and Dave Showalter and Mary and Harry Jones, and her dear friend Mary Bartlinski. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Larry S. Jones, sons Matthew Showalter, Andrew Martin Showalter, Joshua Showalter (Melissa), daughter Sister Maria Faustina Showalter, stepdaughters Jamie Jones (Nathan) and Mandy Talan (David), brother William E. Martin, Jr. (Beverly), sisters Pamela Matras, Mary Celeste Haddock, Mary Elizabeth “Dede” DuBois (Peter), and Theresa “Terry” Frazer (Terry). She is also survived by cherished grandchildren Tyler, Kayla, and Max Talan, Olivia, Tatum, Emmett, and Noah Showalter. She will be dearly missed by her “adopted daughters” the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, her nieces and nephews, and a host of cherished friends who claim their lives were better because of the love and friendship she shared with them.
