Doris Elizabeth Wickless Day, a 50 year Glen Burnie resident, passed away in El Paso, Texas, on May 24, 2009 while visiting her daughter, Nadine D. Butterworth and family. Doris was born on October 14, 1919 at home in Linthicum Heights. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Alphonsus Wickless and Elizabeth Sadler Wickless and 8 brothers – Charles, Paul, Joseph, Gordon, Edwin, Howard, Warren and one stillborn brother; two sisters – Anna Wickless and Elizabeth Wickless McAlexander. Doris was the last child of Joseph and Elizabeth Wickless to pass away. She was also preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Raymond P. Day Jr. Her cousin, Mary DeGrange Linton, introduced her to Ray in 1941. They were together until Ray’s death in June of 1992. Doris was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Thomas Raymond Lane and Raymond Joseph Day Jr. She is survived by one son, Raymond Joseph Day Sr. of Deep Creek and his wife Judy, and two daughters, Nadine Day Butterworth of El Paso and her husband George and Anita Day Goetz of Glen Burnie and her husband William. She is the cherished grandmother of Ryan and Justin Day, Lori Butterworth Connorton, Denise and Warren Butterworth, Raymond Hughes Butterworth, Joseph Lane and William Rudasill; and great-grandmother of Dalton and Valori Connorton and William and Sierra Rudasill. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, several sisters-in-laws and one brother-in-law. Doris’ whole life revolved around her family. Due to an early death of her mother, she basically ‘raised’ her brothers and sisters, taking care of her loved ones. In later years, she was at her happiest when she was with one or all of her children, grandchildren or members of her family. In her spare time, Doris enjoyed walking, traveling, bowling, playing cards, cooking, gardening and baking. Doris also enjoyed having the name “Doris Day”. She would be asked and kidded all the time by those who would remember the actress-singer with whom she shared that name. She would reply that her name was Doris Day and that she wishes, but was not, ‘THE Doris Day”. Along with her soft and ladylike manner, Doris' sense of humor and good sportsmanship showed at many times in many ways. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her and were blessed to have been a part of her life.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be: Ryan Day, Justin Day, Warren Butterworth, Raymond Hughes Butterworth, Nicholas Wood and Richard Knoepfler. Honorary pallbearers will be James Wickless, Joseph Wickless and Joseph Lane.
