Ethel M. Cook (Manning), 98, resident of Severn, passed peacefully under hospice care in her home. She was born in Hilo, Hawaii, on September 16, 1925, to Gabriel and Emelia (Wright) Manning, Sr. She met the love of her life Edmund Thomas Cook at a USO dance when he was stationed in Hilo as a member of the US Navy during World War II. In 1946 they were married in Honolulu, Hawaii and then moved to Washington, DC in 1947. They became residents of Rockville in 1955 to raise their family. Ethel was a medical secretary for Bethesda Naval Hospital for many years. She was a member of the Hawaii State Society of Washington, D.C. and was a longtime parishioner of Granite Baptist Church. She enjoyed socializing with people and being surrounded by her family. She will be missed by those that loved her.
Ethel is preceded by her parents, Gabriel Manning, Sr., and Emelia (Wright) Manning; her husband, Edmund Thomas Cook; and 9 siblings. She is survived by her children, Leilani B. Hannie of Glen Burnie, and Craig E. Cook (Brenda) of Severn; grandchildren, Bryant Hannie (Alisha), Ryan Hannie (Erin), T.J. Swiney, Justin Hannie, Ashleigh Cook (Chris), Stacey Griffin, Craig Cook, Jr., and Chad Swiney and 11 great grandchildren.
Family and friends may visit at the KIRKLEY-RUDDICK FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, October 3rd, 3-5pm & 7-9pm. Funeral service will be on Wednesday, October 4th, 10am, at Granite Baptist Church. Interment on Monday, October 23rd, 1:45pm, at Cheltenham Maryland Veterans Cemetery.
