Florence Mildred Becker was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. At age 101, she passed away peacefully and warm in her bed on the evening of April 29, 2024.
Born in Baltimore on July 11, 1922, Florence was the daughter of Earl Buckley Schofield and Sarah Elizabeth (Howard) Schofield. She was raised on Oak Avenue in Glen Burnie with her brothers Howard and James “Tinky”, where she continued to live out the rest of her independent life. As a child, Florence played basketball and piano, and helped her family grow a Victory Garden to survive the great depression and offset food shortages during WWII. She graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1939.
When her brothers enlisted to fight in WWII, Florence kept herself busy by forming lasting friendships with her girlfriends. They spent many days traveling to Ocean City, MD, New York City, and gathering for boat rides and picnics. She treasured this time period of her life.
Florence married Roy Raymond Becker Sr. on July 15, 1950, at the Ferndale Methodist Church where she remained a lifelong member. Together they had two sons. She was proud to be a working mother as a key-punch operator at USF&G Insurance and B Green & Company in Baltimore, MD.
Florence leaves behind her sons and daughter-in-law, Roy Raymond Jr. “Ray” and Dawn Becker of Preston, MD and Glenn Allen Becker of Pasadena, MD; her grandchildren, Ashley Becker of Mulberry, FL, Juliann and Jay Walls of Preston, MD, Raymond and Katie Becker of Fiskdale, MA, and Joshua Becker of Sykesville, MD; as well as seven great grandchildren: Austin, Jack, Kinsley, Alexander, Bentley, Charlotte, and baby girl Becker. She also leaves behind her dear and steadfast friend, Cathy Elin, who was by her side until the end.
Florence loved spending her golden years socializing with friends and members of her community through her church, the Brooklyn Park Senior Center, Pascal Senior Center, and the Roadrunners traveling club. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, baking, canning vegetables, and playing games like bingo and checkers. It was important to Florence to make holidays special for her family, especially by planning her elaborate Easter egg hunts for her grandchildren. She was sure to never miss a birthday or an anniversary. Her life was lived in service to others by lending a helping hand, a kind word, and an open heart whenever she could. Florence will be remembered most for how she savored the simple joys of life such as music, dancing, and a good slice of coconut cake. Her parting words to her family and friends were to “Be Happy.”
A service, in celebration of Florence Becker’s life, is scheduled for 1:00 on Monday, May 6th, at the Kirkley-Ruddick Funeral Home in Glen Burnie, MD where friends may visit prior to the service from 12:00-1:00. Following the service, a private interment at Glen Haven cemetery will be held with immediate family only.
