Fred Wright Hopkins, Jr.

November 19, 1935 — December 21, 2020

Fred Wright Hopkins, Jr. was born in Staten Island, New York on November 19, 1935 to the late Fred W. Hopkins, Sr.  and the late Margaret Helena (Ullman) Hopkins. Mr. Hopkins was a longtime resident of Linthicum, Maryland. Fred graduated from Baltimore City College in 1953. After high school graduation, he attended Gettysburg College and graduated in 1956. In 1961 he went to graduate school at University of Maryland and graduated with his Masters and Ph.D. in 1969. Fred taught English and Latin at Brooklyn Park, Severna Park and Arundel High Schools. Also coached soccer, wrestling, and lacrosse until 1970. He continued his teachings as a professor of History and was Senior Administrator for the University of Baltimore until his retirement in 2005. Fred was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, Nautical Archaeological Associates, Society for Historical Archaeology, North American Society for Oceanic History, Maritime Committee Maryland Historical Society and Walters Art Gallery Asian Society. He had several publications and was an author of 3 books. He loved swimming, sailing, reading and collecting Scottish, oriental, Maritime miscellany. Fred was a loving husband, dedicated father, and a caring grandfather.

Mr. Fred Wright Hopkins, Jr. passed away peacefully on December 21, 2020 at Glen Burnie Health and Rehabilitation Center. Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Margaret (Leverage) Hopkins; their two sons, Michael Hopkins from Ohio and Timothy Hopkins and his wife Jennifer from Linthicum; and loving grandfather to Matthew, Nicole and Kayla.
