James Howard Poynter was born October 26, 1923 in New Castle, Indiana to James Yetman Poynter and Josie Dearing Poynter. He was a resident of New Carrollton from 1962 to 2004 when he moved to Linthicum. He served his country during WW II in the Navy and after being discharged returned to Indiana where he received a B.S. in Business from Indiana University. After college he continued his career with the Navy, serving during the Korean conflict and the early days of the Viet Nam War. Following his time in the service, he had a second career as a classified employee with the National Security Adiministration. He loved travel, gardening, bowling, was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan and treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceeded in death by his beloved wife Mabel Helena Poynter (nee Harshbarger). Mr. Poynter is survived his daughters Debra L. Delagarza of Linthicum and Lorna A. McFarlane of Glen Burnie and his son Steven R. Poynter of Gambills. He is also survived by seven adoring grandchildren and three great granddaughters. He passed away peacefully in his home after an illness of several months.
