IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Robert
Ervin
July 7, 1947 – February 4, 2026
John Robert Ervin, 78, of Maryland, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, surrounded by loved ones at Johns Hopkins Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, Maryland. Those who were unable to be at his bedside were able to share their goodbyes with him by phone, a comfort that meant a great deal to all who loved him.
Born on July 7, 1947, in Baltimore, Maryland, John was the son of the late Calvin Ray Ervin and Catherine Mae Myers. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Calvin Ray Ervin Jr.
John was mechanically gifted from an early age, a talent clearly influenced by his father, who worked as a diesel engineer for a Baltimore tugboat corporation. John carried that same aptitude and work ethic throughout his life. He devoted decades to the printing industry and proudly served as a Master Printer Engineer from 1987 to 2026, earning the respect of colleagues for his precision, dedication, and deep understanding of the craft. He was known for keeping printing presses running smoothly and for his willingness to troubleshoot even the most challenging problems.
In 2018, John began working at Key Press in Ellicott City, Maryland, and he also spent time working with Blind Industries of Maryland. Wherever he worked, John was regarded as a dependable and valued employee. He genuinely loved learning new things and took pride in helping others, whether through mentoring coworkers or simply lending a steady, reassuring presence.
John is survived by his life partner, Dorothy Dorsey of Ellicott City, as well as extended family, friends, and colleagues who will deeply miss him.
John will be remembered for his quiet strength, generosity of spirit, and unwavering commitment to his work and the people around him. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, both personally and professionally.
