John Robert Simmons, Sr. of Glen Burnie, Maryland passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at the age of 88 at Hospice of the Chesapeake. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle.
John was born on Saturday, December 30, 1933, in Baltimore City to Francis and Catherine (Tolson) Simmons. He grew up in South Baltimore as one of six children. John met his wife, Helen when they were teenagers and married in April of 1954. He said he married Helen because of her mother's crabcakes, her car and her bank account! Together, they raised three children, Denise Sussman of Florida, Linda Gender (Paul) of Pasadena and John, Jr. (Terrie) of Edgewater.
John is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Christopher Baxley (Shannon) of Tennessee, Joseph Schleicher (Erica) of Pasadena, Brandon Baxley (Amanda) of Church Hill, Ashleigh Cadwallader (Ryan) of Arnold, Erin Walker (Joseph) of Arnold, Sarah Wilde (Robert) of Edgewater, Kelly Hatcher (Daulton) of Pasadena; his sister, Lillian Simmons of Baltimore and sister-in-law, Doris Bush of Ocean Pines and many nieces and nephews. He was proud to tell everyone that he had 16 great-grandchildren.
John was a letter carrier in the South Baltimore and Brooklyn areas for many years before he retired. He was a member of St. John's Grace United Church of Christ in Catonsville.
We will remember John's famous tag line, "Yes, Dear". He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Family and friends may visit on Monday, March 28, 2022, 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Funeral service Tuesday, March 29, 2022, 11:30am at the funeral home. Interment Crownsville VA MD Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to, Hospice of the Chesapeake.
