Joyce D. Wells

Born Joyce D. Butler on May 26, 1953 in Washington, D.C. to Raymond Butler (now of California) and the late Betty Bowen Butler, was called by God on Wednesday November 24, 2021 after a long courageous battle. Joyce is preceded in death by her baby son Jerry Wells.

She resided with her sister Margaret and in her words, “brother Lowell” in northern Anne Arundel County for over 20 years.  Joyce loved God and it showed through her providing care, compassion, love and laughter to her patients while working at St. Elizabeth, Crownsville and Spring Grove Hospitals as a nursing assistant during her working years. Her prior work experience also includes a brief stint of service in the Navy. Joyce always went beyond what was expected to make those she cared for feel special and never alone.   Her family describes her as the type of person who lights up a room when she enters and lifts the spirits of all who meet her.

Joyce enjoyed spending time with her family, watching TV, reading, doing word search puzzles, playing computer games and travel. Some of her fondest memories were fun trips with her best friend Bernice, and her enormous love of food, especially chocolate treats.

Left to cherish her memory are her father Raymond Butler, stepmother Nellie Butler, sister Margaret Sherrod and her husband Lowell Sherrod who cared for her in declining health, sister Janice Johnson of California, stepbrother Johnny Miller, loving niece U’tonna Brown,  her husband Audrick Brown IV, great niece Aliya Brown, aunt Jackie Williams, a host of relatives and best friend Bernice Robinson who was never more than a call away.

The immediate family will celebrate her life privately.
