Obituary

Mary Katherine Phillips, Whitfield, Addis (Kathy)

Born March 13, 1949, at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, MD. She died from complications from her COPD. She tried to manage her illness for more than 10 years. Her parents were the late Howard Grady and Clara Sallie Hartley Phillips from Boone and Blowing Rock, N.C.

She had 3 sisters, Virginia and her husband Joe (Elvis) Jeppi, of Edgewood, MD. The late Margaret Elizabeth Hampton Phillips, of Boone, N.C. and Joan and Davis Alderson, of Boone, N.C. She had 3 wonderful nephews, William Krupinsky, Jr. (Bill), Mark H. Krupinsky, and Darrell A. Hampton. 2 beautiful nieces, Ashley R. Hampton, and the late Morgan E. Lawrence. She also had many aunts, uncles, and cousins too; she loved them all and did her best to keep in touch with them.

She grew up on Elm Avenue in Hampden, Baltimore. Her first job was a cashier at G.C. Murphy on 36th Street; she worked part time while attending Jr High and High School. She went to Eastern High School across from the stadium and was in the crowd when the Orioles won the pennant in 1966. She also saw the Little Girl take the pony ride across the stadium every time the Colts made a touchdown.

She studied business courses and worked in the credit field most of her life. She loved the Victorian Era, hats, and clothes, and to decorate. Christmas was her favorite time of the year. It was like all the love you had for others, magically appeared at Christmas time of the year. She did DIY projects before she got too sick.

In 1967, she married her first husband, the late Richard Whitfield, they had a son, Richard Jr, born 1969. He died when he was 6 years old in 1975 from Tay-Sachs disease and is buried in Ocoee, Tennessee.

Kathy and Richard divorced in 1996. Kathy left Tennessee and moved back to Baltimore. She was contacted by her first love from Hampden, Jimmy Addis. The Vietnam War took him 1966. They dated for 2 years and married in 1998. They had a good life, bought a house in Glen Burnie, MD. and realized how time passes so quickly, after 20 short years, Jimmy suddenly had a heart attack and passed away.

Kathy kept the house going that they purchased as long as she could, with the help of her neighbors who always offered their help, Thomas Cudnik, Beverly and Bill Jenkins, Mary and Joe Moss, and Kristen Romano. They brought food, helped with any chore she needed. Greatest neighbors anyone could ever have.

Family and friends may visit at the KIRKLEY RUDDICK FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, January 6th, from 11am - 1pm. Funeral service to begin at 1pm at the funeral home. Internment will be at the Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
