Mary Evelyn Bromble

December 23, 1923 — June 25, 2009

Mary Evelyn Bromble, 85, a 50 year resident of Glen Burnie, MD, died unexpectedly June 25 at Sunrise Independent Living of Severna Park. She was born Dec. 23, 1923 in Springfield, OH and was raised in Norwood, OH, graduating from Norwood HS in 1941. Mary Bromble served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II. She was stationed in California as a radio operator intercepting Japanese coded military communications. While there, she met and married her husband, Edward W. Bromble, Sr. Together they lived the life of a military family, stationed in Hawaii, both coasts of the US, and in Berlin, Germany, before settling in Glen Burnie, MD in 1959. Mary Bromble was an active volunteer in the Army Community Services at Ft. George G. Meade. She wrote and published “Gerald’s Herald,” a newsletter for surviving members of her WWII WAC company, of which there are now 9 remaining. She was an active volunteer with the North Arundel Hospital Auxiliary from 1981 to 2006 where she served in the Gift Shop and on the Auxiliary Board as President, Vice President, and Membership Coordinator. In her earlier years she was a Sunday school teacher and Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. She was homemaker, seamstress (making her own clothes all her life), gardener (many of the potted plants sold in the hospital gift shop were raised by her) and a great cook (canning pickles and vegetables from the garden). She was a talented bowler (in her last year on the Wii bowling game) and card player. Mary Bromble was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Edward W. Bromble, Sr.; mother, Mildred Griessman Elmore; father, Charles Leroy Elmore; and older brother, Richard Leroy Elmore. Survivors include her daughter Sandra Lee Bromble of Baltimore; son Edward William Bromble, Jr. of Glen Burnie; grandson Edward William Bromble, III of Shawnee, Kansas; sister Shirley Stricker of Hamilton, OH and brother Donald Elmore of Twin Falls, Idaho.
