Mary Sue Pagan Latini

July 18, 1924 — September 14, 2017

Mary Sue Pagan Latini was born on July 18, 1924, in Strong, Arkansas, and died on September 14, 2017 in Glen Burnie, Maryland, her home for over 65 years. During World War II, Sue left her home in Arkansas to work for the FBI in Washington, D.C. After the war, she married Robert Latini. and they settled in Baltimore, where she worked at the U.S. Coast Guard Yard. She later became a career employee of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, and made many friends among the naval officers and midshipmen stationed there. She and her husband invited many of the mids to their home and remained in contact with them after their graduation from the Academy. Sue was an excellent cook who could prepare a wide variety of dishes, including international cuisine and particularly the food of the southern United States. She formed a successful cooking duo, "Cooks on the Go", with her good friend and collaborator, Rosalie Falter, and they performed cooking demonstrations at many venues in Maryland. Sue was a long-time volunteer at the 1840 House Living History Museum in Baltimore, where she demonstrated hearth cooking for the museum's visitors. A talented author, Sue wrote "At the Hearth", a book of recipes for cooking on the hearth or in modern kitchens. With its creative and traditional recipes, and interesting commentary, the book is still in demand. She was a member of the Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, the Happy Thyme Herb Club, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She liked to travel and visited her son Bob in Thailand three times, taking donations from her church to a camp for Cambodian refugees there. She also traveled to Italy twice, visiting the 400-year-old ancestral home of her husband Robert Latini. Sue enjoyed participating in the activities of her husband and sons, serving as Cub Scout den mother and Little League Baseball team mother for many years. Sue was predeceased by her loving husband of over 50 years, WWII veteran Robert Latini, who was also a Naval Academy employee. She is survived by her sons Bob Latini and Frank Latini and daughter-in-law Pamela Latini, and her sister, Jo Westmoreland. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 7, 10:00 AM, at Kirkley-Ruddick Funeral Home, 412 Crain Hwy. S., Glen Burnie, Md. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM. Donations in her memory may be made to Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, 200 School Lane, Linthicum, Md., 21090.
