Melvin Joseph Gysegem, 86, Glen Burnie resident, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 1, 2024. Mel was born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, June 3, 1937, to Joseph and Mabel (Henrion) Gysegem. He graduated from Charleroi High School in 1956 and moved to Maryland in 1963 for work; he was a machinist for Koppers, which is now, Kop-Flex. Mel has been a member of Arbutus United Methodist Church for several years. He enjoyed his popcorn, watching his birds in the yard and his flowers. He also loved to go camping with the family and one of his favorite places was Myrtle Beach. Mel could tinker, fix just about everything, he had every tool known to man. He enjoyed woodworking, stained glass and just about anything he could do with his hands. He also enjoyed going to the local car shows to see all the Hot Rods. It reminded him of the old days. Mel was a kind, gentle soul, that was a friend to everyone he met. If anyone needed help all they had to do was call Mel. He would be there with a smile. He volunteered at the food give away every week. He will be greatly missed.
Melvin is preceded by his parents, Joseph Gysegem and Mabel (Henorion) Gysegem; and his step-son, Robert M. Bird. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara Kay (Brown) Gysegem; his children, Debora A. Vaeth (John) of Ferndale and Donald J. Gysegem (Theresa) of Glen Burnie; his step-children, Richard N. Bird (Kristin) of Knoxville, GA, Deborah L. Hockett (James) of Marriottsville, and Steven D. Bird (Helen) of Pasadena; 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
