Michael Chanat

Michael Chanat, 91, died peacefully at home on Friday, December 11, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Olga (Papaila), children Michael, (Glen Burnie), Jeffrey and Rima Franklin (Richmond, VA), Danielle and Keith Smith (Charlotte, NC), Steff and Jeannine Chavez (Rio Rancho, NM) and one very dear grandchild, Theodore Franklin Chanat.

Born in Johnstown, PA to George and Anna (Herko) Chanath, Mike was preceded in death by his sisters Mary Jenkins, Anna Fall, Julia Hilboki and Helen Bennett. He served in the Navy during WWII as a radio and radar technician aboard the escort carrier USS Sangamon , which saw heavy action during the South Pacific campaigns of 1944 and 1945. Mike graduated from the University of Michigan in 1950 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering, and earned a Master’s of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburg in 1961. He retired after 35 years of employment as a Supervisory Engineer with Westinghouse Defense in Linthicum, MD.

Mike was a quiet man and devoted and loving husband and father. He shared his love of science, nature, music, cooking and art with his family. Mike was a long time member of Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in Baltimore, MD. Visitation will be held at Kirkley-Ruddick funeral home on Friday, December 18 from 7 – 9 PM, with a Panikhída (memorial service) beginning at 8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 19 at 11 AM in the Sts. Peter and Paul Chapel at Cathedral Gardens, 6480 Elibank Drive, Elkridge, MD, 21075. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, or to a charity of your choice.
