As a young man he was called to serve his country. During his initial years in the Army he trained as a muleskinner at Camp Carson, Colorado. As a muleskinner he used mules to haul artillery in training for fighting battles in mountainous regions. During his time there he led his mule, packed with artillery, on training exercises in and around Colorado Springs. He often told stories of his travels up and down Pike’s Peak . His time in the service ended at Fort Riley, where he drove a bus on both regular camp routes as well as special trips supporting the USO.
Upon his return to Baltimore, he went to work as a machinist at Bethlehem Steel. He worked there for more than 30 years, but his true love was always farming. After his marriage to Jacqueline they purchased a truck farm in Severn. Michael added a greenhouse to the property so that he could offer vegetable and bedding plants for sale. He eventually specialized in the raising and sale of Hostas.
