Norman Phillip James was born in Baltimore City to Joseph and Catherine (Zeigler) James. They, with Norman’s two sisters, Florence and Elizabeth, moved to Anne Arundel County in 1948.
He served in the US Air Force and, after his discharge, met and married June Surland. Together they had three children. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Teresa (Terry). Survivors include son, Norman James Jr., daughter Susan James, granddaughters Dawn, Erin, and Megan Whitmore, and sister Florence Johnson.
Norman’s interests included reading, astronomy, mechanical and electrical repairs, and discussing current news, politics, and philosophy. After moving to Delaware in 1989 he retired and did small engine repairs for friends and neighbors.
After a debilitating fall, Norman moved to Salisbury, MD where he died from natural causes. Funeral services will be private with interment at Glen Haven Memorial Park.
