Richard Everett Baker was born October 29, 1934 in Lenoir, NC to the late Robert Leslie Baker and Winnie Story Hice Baker. He was a devoted follower of Christ, and that faith shaped every aspect of his personality. It was the reason everyone knew him as such a sweet man, and why he was a loving father, husband, brother, son, father-in-law, uncle and friend. He has been a resident of Glen Burnie since 1967. Mr. Baker received a bachelor's degree in science from Catawba College where he met the love of his life. After college, he proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and Suez Crisis.
He was a member of Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, the Methodist Men at the church, as well as the Rippling Estates Civic Association. He was also a member of the Big Vanilla Racquet Club, where he occasionally played tennis with his wife. Richard was an avid sports fan who coached his sons to play baseball and basketball with Greater Glen Burnie Junior Sports League. Mr. Baker was a star varsity baseball player in high school and then played adult softball for over 50 years. He was a member of the Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks Senior Softball League, where he played for almost 30 of those years and was a member of the Senior Olympic Softball team representing Maryland, winning two gold medals and one silver medal. In 2022, he was inducted into the Senior Softball Hall-of-Fame. He enjoyed a career working in the Division of Air Quality Control for the Anne Arundel County Health Dept. and in the Division of Milk Control for the state of Maryland. He received a special award for over 50 years serving the citizens of Maryland. In his spare time, Mr. Baker enjoyed music, travel, reading, and caring for his yard.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded by his beloved wife of 54 years Margaret Deleetha (Dee) Wiley Baker. Left to cherish his memory are his sons Wiley Everett Baker of Glen Burnie and Wesley Kirk Baker (Annelise) of Frederick; step-sisters Naida Howell (Rick) of Ocean Isle, NC, Stephanie Hice Cherry of Charlotte, NC and Gayle Hice Miller (Sam) of Lenoir, NC, and step-brother David Hice; sister-in-law Deborah Wiley Wales (Harold) of Fawn Grove, PA; and many nieces (including Rebecca Lee Wales and Colleen Marie Wales Robeson) and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations in Richard's honor and memory to go towards Richard's Lenoir High School current renovation project, which will allow multiple special functions to be scheduled, including sports, concerts, reunions, and more. Please make checks and money orders payable to the City of Lenoir, 526 Crestpark Drive, Glen Burnie, MD 21061... "We Love Richard" in the memo.
