Richard "Dick" Zeman, 96, died on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the Baltimore Washington Medical Center. A lifelong Glen Burnie resident, Dick was born on Saturday, March 23, 1929, to Anton and Mary (nee Hodek) Zeman. The youngest of nine children, Dick grew up close to his sisters and brother. He graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1947, continuing his education with college classes that prepared him to become a draftsman. His career entailed stints at Westinghouse, Koppers, and Environmental Elements Corporation.
Dick loved spending time on the water; he owned several sailboats over the years, including a Rhodes Bantam and a Sunflower, and he often competed in sailboat races on the weekends. He was a skilled carpenter, building his first sailboat by hand and creating countless projects in and around the house. Dick had a mischievous, irreverent sense of humor; his daughters were often delighted by his spot-on impression of the Swedish Chef from the Muppets.
Dick had a legendary sweet tooth, favoring any ice cream that included chocolate, cookies, and cakes, as well as apple strudel and stollen. Vegetables were a begrudging addition to his plate, although he would happily make an exception for his wife's green bean casserole.
He was a member of the Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, serving as the president of the United Methodist Men organization, and participating in a number of community outreach efforts, including building Habitat for Humanity houses and serving food at various breakfasts and dinners. His kind, giving, and humorous nature will be missed by so many.
Richard is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn (nee Kilian), his daughters Lisa (Deo Rhoden) and Heather (Michael Tumminio), and his grandson, Hunter Kiayo Rhoden, as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Family and friends may visit at the Kirkley-Ruddick Funeral Home on Saturday, November 8, 2025, 3pm - 5pm. A celebration of Dick's life will begin at 5pm. Interment is private.
