Ruth R. Pumphrey

With sadness we announce the passing of Ruth R. Pumphrey ( née Hall) , our devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched, on July 29, 2021.  The lifelong resident of Anne Arundel County left us peacefully at home.

Ruth was a lifelong athlete playing a variety of sports including Basketball and Softball in her youth.   Throughout her life, she enjoyed an active lifestyle that included a diverse set of hobbies and interests including traveling, cooking, bowling, boating, the beach, water aerobics, power walking, bingo, music, dancing and was an avid reader.

Her career interests were as diverse as her hobbies.   Ruth and 1 st husband Stephen “Bill” Ryan owned/operated a tavern in Gambrills, MD for over 14 years.  She drove a School Bus in Anne Arundel County for 30+ years.  All while being a devoted caregiver and performing generous acts of service for friends and family members in their time of need.

Ruth’s greatest love was for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and animals.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands Stephen “Bill” Ryan and Charles “Sonny” Pumphrey and her 3 siblings.

She is survived by her children, Karen Deming of Crofton, MD, Kathy Pisciotta, Pueblo, CO, Lee Ann Brown of Austin, TX, Charles F. Pumphrey of Surfside Beach, SC and Michael D. Ryan of Selbyville, DE. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of a life well lived will be held at the Crownsville Maryland Veterans Cemetery (1122 Sunrise Beach Rd, Crownsville, MD 21032) on August 31, 2021 @ 11:30am.

Her family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association, Arthritis Foundation or the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.
