Shirley S Jones,
Born Shirley Sykes on May 31, 1935 in North Carolina to the late Bryant Winslow Sykes, Sr. and Erma Evelyn Sykes. (Andrews) She moved to Glen Burnie as a small child and was a 1953 graduate of Glen Burnie High School. She married Robert N Jones of Glen Burnie, in 1955. She was an active member of Glen Burnie United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Shirley offered herself to many charitable concerns, with a preference for charities that helped mothers with basic needs, including Susanna Wesley House and NCEON. In her spare time she enjoyed dancing, gardening, interior design, reading and travel, but most of all she was a loving mother and grandmother, whose door was always open for family and friends. She loved to attend as many of the grandchildren’s activities as she could, and always had an encouraging word for each of them.
Left to cherish her memory are sons Robert N. Jones, Jr. and his wife Melinda, William Jones and his wife Carolyn, daughters Jennifer Jones and her husband Dave Willie and Valerie Gilman and her husband Jeff. Also her brothers Berry, and David Sykes, sisters Evelyn Kadan, Genia Bryant, Carolyn Fuhr and Judy Schimenant. She is also survived by cherished grandchildren Joshua, Justin, Delaney and Jeffrey Gilman, Madison, Morgan, Brad, Bobby and Kelsey Jones as well as great-grandchild Lee Gilman. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Jones, her brothers Winny Sykes, Jr., Marion Sykes, Bill Sykes, Butch Sykes, and sister Connie Sykes.
Shirley passed away peacefully in her home on July 3 and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Calling hours will be at Glen Burnie United Methodist church from 11:00am until 12:30 with memorial services to follow.
