Stephen Michael Dyer, 80, Annapolis resident, died peacefully under hospice care in his home surrounded by his family on August 24, 2025.
Steve was born in Warrington, Lancashire, England, on October 26, 1944, to Eugene and Irene Dyer, a US Army Air Forces soldier and English “war bride” of WWII.
Following his father’s career in the newly formed US Air Force, Steve’s family lived in many locations both in the United States and overseas, including Japan and England, before returning to the States to graduate in 1962 from Union High School in Middleton, Wisconsin. A 1966 graduate of Michigan Technological University, Steve worked as a Chemical Engineer in Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. He retired from W.R. Grace Curtis Bay location after nearly twenty years in the newly formed field of environmental engineering. The Maryland Department of the Environment appointed him to serve as a member of its Air Quality Control Advisory Council because of his knowledge and expertise.
Steve enjoyed gardening (both vegetables and flowers), collecting stamps and home projects, including building rock walls for their terraced yard. His biggest enjoyment was lapidary and “rock hound” adventures. He was a member of multiple lapidary organizations throughout his life, most recently in the Chesapeake Gem and Mineral Society and the Baltimore Mineral Society.
Whether family, friend, colleague or neighbor, people remember Steve as a man of honesty, integrity and hard work. His good humor and laugh could brighten a room. Many neighborhood children knew “Mr. Steve,” and he often served as an honorary grandfather. He touched many lives with his quiet kindness and generosity. He loved his family and treasured his wife.
Stephen is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Charles Dyer and Irene (Taylor) Dyer. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Phyllis (Benton) Dyer; his two daughters, Joy Mullori (Michael) and Amberly Dyer (Jon); and his grandchildren, Lydia and Matthew.
Services and Interment are private.
