On April 29, 2009, William “Bill” Benton Sr. passed away from natural causes at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Born in Baltimore on October 19, 1937, Bill lived in Glen Burnie for 40 years. Devoted husband of 46 years to Mary E. Benton (nee Gelwicks); Beloved father of W. Earl Benton Jr. of Pasadena and Holley Greenfield and her husband John of Brooklyn Park; Loving brother of Ricky Benton of Paronsburg; Cherished grandfather of Pamela and Morgan Greenfield. He is also survived by his two aunts Eileen Hofler of Millersville and Margaret Fanazzo of Linthicum and many loving family members and friends.
Bill worked as a machinist for DNH in Elkridge, for Westinghouse Oceanic and for the Naval Observatory. He was a part of the team that created the telescope for the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Bill was a member of the Gold Wings Road Riders Chapter C in Glen Burnie, Harley Owners Group in Elkridge and the NRA. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and camping. Bill was also an avid motorcycle rider and drove across country six times, visited 47 states and Canada. He once drove 3,400 miles in just two weeks. Bill enjoyed being outdoors and vacationing with his family and grandchildren.
